Hostess Tray Rig

Hostess Tray Rig

A hostess tray is a side-mounted platform that attaches to a car door for camera placement.

In this guide, we’ll break down how to set up a Modern Deluxe Hostess Tray and include some quick videos so you can see how it's done.

Step 1: Prep

Before rigging: Have the vehicle parked on level ground with the parking brake on and in a safe place to rig.

Camera placement: Check with the camera operator and/or DP to confirm camera placement.

Car Prep: Place duvetyn or furniture blanket with Photo Black Tape to protect the vehicle.

Step 2: Positioning

Mount the tray: Place the tray directly on the door or use Blade Inserts for rigging the tray with the window up.

Level the Tray: Adjust so the platform sits parallel to the road. Add a leveling head with a Dovetail to attach the camera.

Step 3: Securing the Rig

Ratchet Straps: Run ratchet straps from the outer edges of the tray, down to gutter hooks or strong points underneath the vehicle.

Speed Rail Add-Ons: For heavier builds, add speed rail with fittings to starters that are attached to the vehicle.

Step 4: Mounting the Camera

Camera Placement: Have the camera operator frame up the shot and confirm it's ready.

Secure the camera: You can secure the camera using arms and heads or rods and swivel clamps to parts with baby pins. Three points are recommended for maximum stability.... Two of the arms typically go side to side from the top of the camera to the vehicle or hostess tray and one arm directly from the top of the camera to the top of the vehicle or windshield using suction cups or clamps.

Add a Camera Safety (carabiner + rope or strap) from camera body to tray or vehicle.
